As I sit here on new years eve and think back over the last 12 months, I am truly in awe. Coming in to this year I had been mainly a sports photographer. In 2010, I spent many Friday nights shooting high school football games, traveled around to shoot professional soccer matches (including my favorite club on the planet Manchester United in Kansas City), and spent an unnatural amount of Saturdays shooting paintball events around the southeast. As of this time last year, I had shot a grand total of 1 portrait session.
Twelve months later though, I can say I’ve shot many portrait sessions of all different types, shot a few amazing weddings, and have been published for my commercial work. I’ve also continued to shoot one of my passions, soccer. I got to attend the Gold Cup (basically a regional version of the world cup) matches this summer as a photographer for Global Football Today. It was unbelievable to be a photographer on the field watching the US national team play in Detroit. It was a surreal moment for me and one I hope to do again. One of my personal goals is to photograph a World Cup, but that is for another time! 🙂
It really has been amazing for me to watch the likes on my facebook page gradually increase, twitter followers grow, to see people subscribing to my email newsletters, and to see MRM grow. This year I was able to get an amazing new logo with the help of Scarlett’s Web, and she designed some gorgeous business cards for me too! She’s also going to be working with me on a completely redesigned website, blog and online galleries for 2012 so be on the lookout!
One thing I must mention about 2011 though was the Godsend of finding an amazing mentor. If you are reading this Christi Falls, you are truly amazing! Christi has been so open and helpful to me from the very first time I emailed her, it has been so awesome. She helped me figure out everything from pricing, to marketing, to inviting me to come second shoot weddings with her a couple of times. She is genuinely one of the nicest and most inspirational people I’ve met on this journey. I don’t know where I’d be right now without her. So, THANK YOU Christi! 🙂
I also have to thank my amazing wife, Courtney. She has been so supportive of my dream. I couldn’t do it without her! I love you Courtney! 🙂
Thinking back on how this year has progressed, its staggering. To all of you that have believed in me and given me a chance to capture the important moments in your life, THANK YOU! I’m so lucky to have met each and every one of you. You all have inspired me, challenged me, and kept pushing me throughout this year. You drive me to get better. My sincerest hope is that each and every one of you have an absolutely amazing 2012. I can’t wait to see you all again in the new year!!
