Today marks the end of week 4 / beginning of week 5 on my journey to being fit. Yesterday was the last day of week 4 of couch to 5k. When I first start running, maybe 2 minutes in, I was ready to quit. Already thinking that there was no way I was going to finish. I started asking myself if it would be ok to just scrap that day and try again today. I managed to push through that first running section. As I was walking to get ready to the next run, I made the decision to finish no matter how bad it hurt. And finish I did. Not only did I finish, but I was able to push a pretty fast and consistent pace. My first mile was only seconds slower than my fastest, and my second mile was only 15 seconds slower than my first. So, at the end of the run, I felt like a million bucks.
One thing I’ve learned from the first half of the couch to 5k program is a trust in the program. Its built up my confidence every run. It lays out what needs to be done, and I always seem to be able to do it. Each run looks daunting as I look at it the day before, but when I get out there, I just know I’ll be able to do it because I’ve built up that trust with the program. Thats critical. And I think that level of confidence is trickling over to other areas of my life. I know if I can do something that is this challenging for me physically day in and day out, then I can do anything that I set my mind to. Thats pretty powerful stuff!
One thing to note, I do live in an insanely hilly neighborhood. I get about 270ft or so of elevation change on my runs according to Nike+. Its brutal, but I think it pushes me more and will make the actual 5k I am running on March 10 that much easier. Including my 5 min walk cool downs and warm-ups (10 min of walking at the beginning and end) I am around 2.6ish miles in about 30 minutes on the 3 runs this week. My mile pace is around 13 min. Which is a big improvement from the 16 min miles I was getting my first week. Just FYI, you can walk a mile in about 20. Obviously I’m not setting any land speed records, but at least I’m running. 🙂
When I weighed in today I am still about 17lbs down. I’ve been holding steady for the past week, but my clothes are fitting A LOT better. I’m thinking I must be building muscle in my legs and its offsetting the fat loss. I’m really excited to see where I am by the time this 5k rolls around. My main goal is to just finish and run the entire thing. I will not allow myself to walk at all. The secondary goal is to push for a decent time. I have no idea what a “good” time is, but I’ll figure that out as I keep running and training. 🙂
Don’t forget, the January special runs out Tuesday at midnight! So, I need to hear from you in the next couple of days so we can save you some money!!
I hope you all have a wonderful Saturday! I’m getting ready for a huge family cookout this afternoon for my birthday with all of my family and Courtney’s family. So excited!
